Gustavo “Gus” Aponte has been a head coach with the FC America Kumba since 1999. Gus is originally from Bogotá, Columbia and moved to Florida 18 years ago to work for the Coca Cola Company. Gus has been playing soccer since he was six years old. When he was 12 years old, he was drafted to play in a minor league. He played for Santa Fe de Bogotá for two years. At age 14, he started playing for Olaya Herrera, an amateur team, where he played under two professional coaches, Canon and Waltino. Gus is a passionate soccer coach and player. He loves teaching others the game of soccer. Gus has been coaching soccer since 1994. From 1994 -1999, he coached boys aged 7-10. He won two championships while coaching the boy’s teams. In 1999, he began coaching his present team of girls. While with FC America, his girls have gained prominence as they have progressed through the ranks. They have consistently stayed in the top 25 teams for their age in the State, and for the past two years, they have represented the club in their age bracket at the Sweet 16 Round of State Cup. His girls have traveled the state over the past several years participating in numerous tournaments such as the Disney Soccer Showcase, Columbus Cup, Gator Soccer Showcase, Clearwater Coca Cola Classic, etc. This year, they won the Columbus Cup Tournament, soundly beating their opponents. Gus lives in Seminole County with his wife, Jackie. They have two sons, Andrew and Armando, and two daughters, Vanessa and Natalie. They all are actively involved in their community. Gus and his children play indoor soccer together in Central Florida. Gus’ skill and knowledge of the game have enabled him to instill his passion for the game as well as life long soccer skills in the players he coaches. He has been responsible for raising the level of play for these girls over the past several years.
