U-17 Boys Go Undefeated at GSA Super Cup Memorial Tournament

June 5, 2004 ...  Although they took 2nd place, the U-17 Boys were undefeated in the GSA Super Cup tournament held this past Memorial Day weekend in Atlanta.

As noted by the game scores, the competition was extremely high level as the Omni faced several ranked teams from the state of Georgia. The tournament kicked off with the Omni winning 2-1 over Forsyth Fusion 88 and 1-0 over Roswell Santos (9th in Georgia) on Saturday. Going on to defeat AFC Lighting Gold (#3 in Georgia) 3-2, and then defeating Atlanta United Freedom Gold 2-0 in the semi final match on Sunday catapulted the Omni into the Final match on Monday vs. GSA Phoenix Red 87 (The Host Club).

The championship game with GSA Phoenix Red 87 (#4 in Georgia) was an exciting game with each team basically controlling one half of the game, and neither one able to capitalize. The technically more sound Omni had several major scoring opportunities in the first half but were unable to convert. The second half found the much bigger and faster GSA team pushing up and holding their line for offside trapping which proved to be an effective tool against the Omni. The strategy paid off and allowed GSA greater scoring opportunities in the second half, but like their counterparts in the first half they were unable to convert.

The Game went into two 10 minute overtimes - again with neither team able to find the net. Forcing the 0-0 tied game into penalty kicks, with GSA coming out on top converting 5 of 6 to Omni's 4 of 6.

This strong showing placed the FC America Omni Boys U-17 team into 6th place in the state rankings for Florida.  What an awesome feat and optimistic way for this group to initiate their new season tryouts this next week!

Great Job - and good luck to the many who'll be trying out for the U-18 squad!
